Privacy policy
Last updated 24 September 2026
The short version
- Nell keeps your household's papers, renewals and lists so your family can use them. That's all we use them for.
- Everything you add is private to you until you choose to share it.
- We don't sell your information, show adverts or use tracking or analytics tools.
- When the app reads a scan or photo to fill in details, that happens on your own phone. Your documents are never sent to an outside AI service.
- Your data is stored on our server in the UK. Uploaded files are encrypted there.
- You can delete anything, or your whole account, from inside the app.
Who we are
Nell is made by We Are One Apps, run by Austin Mitchell in the United Kingdom. We're the data controller for the information described here. You can contact us at info@weareoneapps.com.
What we keep, and why
Your account
Your email address and name, so you can sign in (we email you a one-time code; there are no passwords) and so your family can see who's who. We also keep a record of the devices you're signed in on (the device name and when it was last used) so you can see them and sign one out.
What you add
The items, policies and renewals you add and their details (such as provider, policy number, renewal date, price and notes), files and photos you upload, the text read from them so you can search it, links, to-dos, shopping lists, calendar events, your start page settings and your Legacy plan. You choose what goes in. We use it only to provide the app to you and the people you share with.
Some of what you add may be about other people, for example your children's passports or a family policy. Please only add information you're entitled to share.
People you invite or name
If you invite someone to your household, or name a trusted contact for your Legacy plan, we keep the name and email address you give us and email them on your behalf: an invitation, or a note that you've named them. A trusted contact is told that a plan exists, never what's in it, unless it's released to them under the rules you set.
Subscriptions
If you subscribe, payment is handled by Apple through the App Store. We never see your card details. We keep a reference to the subscription from Apple so we know your plan is active.
Server logs
Like any website, our server records basic request logs, including IP addresses, to keep the service running and secure. These are deleted automatically after 14 days.
What stays on your device
- Reading scans and photos. Text recognition, reading a passport's machine-readable lines or a driving licence, and Apple Intelligence all run on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
- Your own calendars. If you let the app see your calendars, it reads them on your device to show them next to the family calendar. They're only shared with your family if you choose to share them.
- A copy of your files is kept on your devices so they open when you're offline. The app can be locked with Face ID, Touch ID or your passcode.
Who else is involved
We use a small number of services to run Nell. None of them may use your information for their own purposes.
- Hostinger hosts our server in the UK and sends our emails (sign-in codes, invitations and reminders).
- Apple handles App Store purchases, TestFlight and, if you turn them on, notifications to your devices.
- Open-Meteo provides the weather on the web start page. Our server asks for the forecast for the town you choose. Nothing that identifies you is sent.
- Websites you save. When you add a link, our server visits that page once to fetch its title and icon.
If we let you store files in your own Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive in future, and you choose to connect one, your files will be stored there under that provider's terms.
Sharing inside your family
Everything you add is private to you by default. You decide what to share: with everyone in your household, or with particular people. People you share with can see those items, and can edit them if you allow it. Household owners and admins manage who's in the household.
How we protect it
- All connections use HTTPS.
- Files you upload are encrypted on our server with a separate key for each household.
- Links to files expire after a few minutes, and links you share with someone outside the app expire when you choose.
- We take a backup every night, kept for 14 days, so we can recover from a fault.
How long we keep it
We keep your information for as long as you have an account. When you delete an item it's removed from the app straight away. When you delete your account, your account, your private items and their files, and any household you own are deleted. You leave any household you've joined, but items you shared into someone else's household stay with that household. Deleted information is gone from our backups within 14 days.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you can ask for a copy of your information, ask us to correct or delete it, object to how we use it, or ask us to limit it. Most of this you can do yourself in the app. For anything else, email info@weareoneapps.com and we'll reply within a month.
We rely on providing the service you've asked for (a contract) as our legal basis, and on our legitimate interest in keeping the service secure (for server logs and backups).
If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
Children
Nell is for adults running a household. Parents can add details about their children, such as a passport, but children shouldn't have their own account unless a parent has invited them.
Changes
If we change this policy we'll update the date at the top, and tell you in the app if the change matters.
